Model: Blunderbuss
Type: Shotgun
Gauge: 2 inch
Barrel: 19 inch round
Finish: bright
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1757
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 141
Class: Antique
Description:

This brass barrelled blunderbuss weighs over 16 pounds, has a 2 1/8 inch muzzle opening, and was almost certainly fitted as a swivel gun on a boat in the 18th century. Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery mounted similar weapons to their pirogues for their expedition. This example is unmarked aside from two English cross scepter proofmarks on the left side at the breech. It has a nearly full length stock and a wooden ramrod with contrasting tip.

Rating Definition:

Good. The brass has an aged patina and various scratches and dings. The lock has a dark brown patina. The stock is fair with a crack at the breech, a few additional small cracks, a chip at the tail of the lock, and a large sliver absent from the right side of the forend. The lock functions very well when removed and tested, but the trigger does not currently drop the cock.
