Description:

The African trophies contained within the collection consist of mounts from German East Africa, a colony that approximates the modern states of Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania. Kaiser Wilhelm II collected trophies in this area from his favorite soldiers and friends and displayed them throughout his many hunting lodges. This pair of African antelope were harvested by Tom von Prince (1866-1914), an infantryman in the Prussian Army. After serving in the Prussian infantry, von Prince joined the protection force in German East Africa known as the Wissmann Troop. Von Prince served with distinction under his commanding officer, Herman von Wissman, and was soon promoted to captain. He later worked as a colonial administrator and then as a plantation owner. For his service to the colonies, he was raised to the Prussian nobility in 1906. At the outbreak of the first World War, von Prince returned to active military service and died at the Battle of Tanga. Mounted to an antique Bulgarian castle's hand-carved column cornice, 9 x 6 x 16.5 inches, both skulls bear the black ink marking "Tom v. Prince". In front is a springbok, 8.5 inches high and 9.25 inches wide, and the rear an impala, 16 inches high and 13.5 inches wide with a brass Lion's Order German Colonial Service Medal 2nd Class on the forehead.

Rating Definition:

Very good with some separation of the bones at the joints, a few mild age cracks in the wood, and mild handling marks overall.
