Description:

Though all are rare, some of the surviving examples of early American fowling pieces tout some surprisingly long barrels such as a known Connecticut gun with a 60 inch barrel and a Hudson Valley piece we previously auctioned off with a barrel nearly the same length. By comparison, the Long Land Pattern Brown Bess of the 18th century only had a 46 inch long barrel. This fowling piece weighs just over 13 pounds and has an impressive 53 inch long round barrel with a spot for a front sight and a dished section at the breech used as a rear sight prior to the addition of the fixed notch rear sight. The wear at the muzzle suggests the barrel may have even been longer at one point. There are no visible markings on the piece aside from some light engraving on the lock plate. The underside of the lock has "TLCW" stamped at center. The ornate side plate is reminiscent of French flintlocks. The overall design suggests this piece was made in the colonies or the early United States. Note for example the full length maple stock with attractive stripe figure. The stock has carved tear drop flats in front of and behind the lock, more carving at the breech, and a brass thumb piece.

Rating Definition:

Fair as restored. The iron surfaces have a well established dark brown patina with some mild pitting and oxidation. The brass has an aged patina. The front sight is absent as noted above. The lengthened, extensively refurbished wood is good as re-oiled and repaired in the past with some small chips and dings, the usual wear near the breech, and a few scratches. The lock functions very well.
