Description:

The bore of this market hunter fowling piece at the muzzle gauges just under 7 gauge. Market hunting was prevalent in the 19th Century in America where there were large numbers of ducks on the rivers and bays and the practice was to shoot as many as possible with every shot due to the lengthy reload time of a muzzleloading long arm. This was achieved by large bore guns of this type. The underside of the barrel has three cross scepter proofmarks and a "7". A single bead front sight is situated at the muzzle, and the top of the barrel is engraved with a star design. The other components display English scroll engraving. The lock is marked "BLAKEMORE & SON" at the front. Blakemore & Son were active from 1867 until 1897. The half stock is secured by two wedges and has a checkered wrist and smooth shotgun buttplate. It includes a wooden ramrod with a large horn tip.

Rating Definition:

Good. The fowling piece has a smooth dark patina and some minor pitting and oxidation. The refinished stock is good with some lightly visible hairlines, minor handling marks with crisp checkering. The action functions fine, and the markings are mostly crisp.
