Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1862 and was subsequently custom engraved in the 20th century in the style of engraving commonly seen on revolvers engraved by Gustave Young. Note the dog head engraving pattern on the hammer, the coarse scroll and punch dot engraving patterns, and the checkered one-piece grip which are all similar to other known Young engraved revolvers. Note the similar hammer on the Model 1860 Army on the top of page 82 of "The Book of Colt Engraving" and the similar grips on page 96. Also note the eagle head design near the wedge which is very similar to those on the revolvers on page 99. The revolver is marked with the one-line "New York U.S. America" address, and the left side of the frame has the "COLTS/PATENT" marking. The serial numbers (aside from the wedge) match and all but the cylinder and cylinder pin have an "E" above or below them. The latter mark was first used by the Colt factory circa mid-1861 and was used to specify parts destined for factory engraving until the early 1870s. It has the standard sights and is built with a military contract style frame and back strap cut for a detachable shoulder stock. The modern case contains two Eley cap tins with caps, a Colt's patent dual cavity bullet mold, several lead balls and a conical bullet, and a Syke's patent powder flask.

Rating Definition:

Good as custom embellished. The revolver has an artificial gray-brown patina overall along with spots of slight pitting and various minor dings. There is some rust and pitting in the hammer slot. The wedge and wedge screw are replacements. The engraving is crisp and distinct throughout as are most of the markings aside from the cylinder scene. The brass has an aged patina. The grip is very good with crisp checkering, mild aging and corresponding age cracks, and a fine fit. The action functions very well. The relined case is very good with only mild handling and storage wear including some compression marks on the lining from the revolver and accessories. The latter are fine to very good.
