Description:

Made in 1861, the '62 Police is regarded by many as one of the most streamlined production arms to leave the Colt factory during the percussion era. Pin front sight on barrel with one-line block letter New York address and casehardened creeper-style loading lever. The cylinder is stamped "PAT SEPT. 10th 1850" inside one of the flutes, the frame is stamped "COLTS/ PATENT" on the left side, and the trigger guard is marked "L" on the left shoulder. The grip straps are silver finished brass, and the grips are smooth one-piece walnut. All matching numbers, including the wedge and grips. The desk measures 4x9x13 inches when closed, and opens up on a 9 1/2x15 cloth covered writing space, with two places for ink, one ink vial, a compartment for pens, and two storage areas under the writing surface. The first, in the lid, contains a large feather, and the one in the base holds an integrated storage case for the pistol, with fabric lining and cutouts for the pistol, powder flask, tin of percussion caps, bullet mold, and two boxes of cartridges, all included.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with 90% of the original finish. The barrel and cylinder show some areas of mottled brown patina, with strong original blue and some light handling marks. The frame shows some silvering around the edges, and brilliant casehardening. The grip frame is excellent, with almost all of the original silver finish, a dark aged patina in many areas, and a few handling marks on the butt. The grips are excellent, with some dings on the butt, scratches, and wear around the high edges. The action is excellent. The travel desk is in very fine condition, with a number of dings and scratches on the exterior, and some minor soiling of the material. The glass vial is broken at the neck, but otherwise very good. The flask and mold are contemporary, and in excellent condition. The cap tin is in fair condition, with some damage to the label, corrosion of the metal, and dark stains on the wrapper. One of the cartridge boxes is intact and unopened, with some tearing along the edges and minor wear. The other is opened on one end, but still has the cellophane wrapper, with some wear, tear and staining.
