Description:

Both revolvers were manufactured in 1865. The revolvers both have the one line "NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" barrel address, "COLT"S PATENT" frame marking, stagecoach hold-up cylinder scene, post and notch sights, spurious English proofmarks on the barrels and cylinders, matching serial numbers, wedges without retaining springs, and smooth walnut grips. Gun A also has "8" on the front left and "31 CAL" on the rear left of the trigger guard. The pair comes in a fitted hardwood case with "CHARLES PIPER/Gun & Pistol maker/CAMBRIDGE" label, two cap tins (one is an un-opened "UMC" tin), numerous lead balls and conical bullets, dual cavity brass "COLTS/PATENT" bullet mold, combination nipple wrench/screw driver and a James Dixon & Sons powder flask.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially polished (barrel). The grip frame has an aged patina with traces of the original silver plating. The barrel is partially bright with some oil staining. The cylinder has traces of the original blue, and 20% of the original case colors remain on the other parts. There are patches of light pitting and mild oxidation. The grip is very fine with most of the original varnish, mild handling marks and wear. The action is fine and the markings are mostly crisp.

Rating Definition:

Good. The brass has traces of the original silver plating and otherwise an aged brown patina. The iron has a gray patina with tooling type marks, various dings and scratches, and some light pitting. The grip is fine with moderate handling wear, scrapes, and dings. The action needs work: the hammer currently does not lock up and the timing is off. The case is fine with moderate overall storage wear and some staining and minor tears on the interior.
