Description:

This revolver's serial number dates to 1862. It is marked with the one line New-York U.S. America barrel address, standard Colt's patent marking on the left side of the frame, matching serial numbers, and the stage coach scene on the cylinder. The revolver has the standard post and notch sights, blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame, and hammer; a silver plated grip frame, and a varnished one piece walnut grip. The back strap is inscribed "Richd. Gray. Jr. Asst, Surg. 21st. O.V.I." and "J. Westerman" is on the butt. Richard Gray, Jr. was a member of the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry which saw extensive action during the Civil War including the Battle of Chickamauga, the Sieges of Atlanta and Savannah, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Private Jacob and Corporal Joseph Westerman were both in Company G of the 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and died in Napoleon, Ohio, in the early 20th century. Within the research documents are copies of ledger pages listing the sick and wounded along with documents discussing medical treatment during the Civil War. The revolver comes in a brass cornered wood case "MANUFACTURED/COLELY BY W. KIDDER" and "PATENT/APR. 1854" stamps on the inside rear edge. The case contains a Eley Bros. tin for caps, a combination tool, dual cavity bullet mold, a 5 inch barrel group complete with wedge and loading lever, and a small eagle powder flask.

Rating Definition:

Good as partially refinished (cylinder). The revolver has primarily a mottled gray patina with hints of case colors on the hammer, frame, and loading lever; an applied brown on the cylinder; traces of blue on the second barrel set; and 30% of the silver plating on the grip frame. The silver and brass have an aged patina. The grip is very good with some strike marks, mild handling wear, and some slight chips. Both of the wedges are loose and do not have retaining springs, and the first has been numbered to match. The case is fine as relined with some separation at the corners and overall moderate storage wear including stains and tears on the interior. The accessories are fine or better.
