Description:

A multi-purpose training device, this "gun" is effectively a camera mounted in an oversized housing, suitable for installation in a wing mount or waist-gun emplacement. When the trigger is pulled, the camera runs, with footage being taken of what the gun is aimed at, as well as an optional stopwatch; after landing, the film can be analyzed by the trainers for proper lead and burst timing. Measuring 29 inches overall with a matte black finish, a transparent housing and reflector array on the "barrel" for the stopwatch, mounting positions for a set of anti-aircraft sights (included), and nomenclature plates on top and on the right side behind the crank. With a hardwood transport case, three trigger assemblies (two pistol grips and one for a remote line for wing mount), nine film canisters (eight with metal protective cans), equipment for winding and unwinding the film and three remote actuation cables. The case, in addition to the assorted Japanese nomenclature, was repurposed as a shipping case, addressed from one Vincent Raymond, Class 5 Technician, 798th Ordnance Company, 98th Infantry Division (via San Francisco), to a Mrs. Joseph Raymond of Audobon, New Jersey, with the capture certificates included with the original Japanese manual. Mostly filled with recruits from the New York area and New England, the 98th (special designation "Iroqouis") was deployed to the Pacific, where they were responsible for the defense of the Hawaiian Islands. Earmarked to participate in Operation Olympic, the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands, the 98th instead performed post-war occupation duty. The 98th would be deactivated in 1946, reactivated during the Cold War as a training unit, and would be deployed to post-Saddam Iraq to help train the local Army and Police forces and establish schools for commissioned and non-commissioned officers.

Rating Definition:

The camera is in excellent condition with 98% of the original WWII Japanese black crinkle finish overall, with four very small screws missing on the top rear area, (for the film frame counter device) with the mirror and upper cover detached but included. The case is fair, showing wear, tear and damage appropriate to coast-to-coast shipping, with a number of cracks and chips. Mechanically untested.
