Description:

This is an example of a very late WWI US Army contract Colt Model 1911 pistol that is professionally restored. The basic pistol was actually manufactured in the that last contract block of Colt 1911 pistols in 1918. it is marked with a small circled spurious "S" on the upper right side of the trigger guard bow and at that time possibly converted into 22 LR. This single shot conversion was originally developed by 2nd Lt H.J. Kerr of the Coastal Artillery Corp. in 1914 as a way to save the cost of standard 45 ACP cartridges. It was never fully utilized due to the start of WWI and was later redesigned in the 1930s by Carbine Williams and again by Colt prior to WWI. Williams' design used a floating chamber while the Kerr/Sedgley design uses a "fixed" off-set 22 caliber barrel inserted into the standard 45 ACP barrel along with the standard firing pin and extractor. The top of the barrel has the early separate "H and P" proofs from the Colt factory while the left side is roll stamped "R.F. SEDGLEY INC., PHILA PA. U.S.A." This design does not use a magazine as the pistol was intended to be hand loaded each time and fired as a single shot pistol only. The left side of the slide has the standard two-line, two-block, Colt patent/address markings divided by the Rampant Colt in the middle. The right side is roll marked "MODEL OF 1911.U.S. ARMY" in sans-serif letters. The left side of the frame is stamped with the U.S. "EagleHead/S8" inspection stamp with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamped on the front frame extension. It has the standard/correct WWI type parts and components such as the long trigger, wide checkered hammer, short grip safety, checkered slide stop and thumb safety, and flat mainspring housing with lanyard staple. It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips with diamond patterns around the screws and a full blue barrel marked "S/P" on the lug.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as restored with 95% of the refurbished blue finish and clear markings overall. The grips are also in very fine condition.
