Description:

This revolver is discussed and pictured in the included copy of Don Wilkerson's "Colt's Single Action Army Revolver: Pre-War Post-War Model". It is the very first gun pictured in the book (p. 16). As detailed in both the book and factory letter, the revolver was assembled on April 8, 1940, but remained in Colt's possession for nearly 22 years before it was sold in its current form (grips not listed) and shipped to Don Glaser in Emporia, Kansas, on February 6, 1962. Wilkerson's research discovered only six revolvers that were actually assembled pre-war but not shipped until the 1950s or 1960s. Also included is a letter from a prior owner to Glaser and Glaser's response. In the response Glaser notes that he purchased the revolver directly from Colt and "never pulled the hammer while I owned it." He says it was kept in a closet until he sold it to John Rohner. Rohner happens to be the designer of the "Gravermeister" pneumatic engraving tool. The current owner states that this revolver has never been fired, and it has been in his possession since 1980. The revolver has the standard Colt markings and pre-war/post-war features and is fitted with a pair of checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt emblem embossed at the top. The box has a matching end label and "NICKEL FINISH" sticker, a bore brush and manual on the inside, and an exceptionally crisp pencil marking on the bottom that is just as it is pictured on page 77 of the above book (the book incorrectly states it was written in white). The original shipping box with correct shipment label is also included.

Rating Definition:

Near new in box. The revolver has very faint cylinder drag lines and light handling marks. The box is also near new with some very slight storage wear. The shipping sleeve is in very good condition. As discussed above and in the included book, this is one of just six known Pre-War/Post-War Colt Single Action Army revolvers that was genuinely assembled before the war and not shipped until the 1950s or 60s. This example is in beautiful condition and is almost certainly impossible to improve upon especially given the condition of the box and its documented history.
