Description:

The factory letter confirms this rifle is one of only 18 Model 1886s originally manufactured for in the extremely rare 50-105 caliber. The letter also verifies the rifle configuration, octagon barrel, plain trigger and that it was received in the warehouse on October 23, 1888. On May 28, 1889, the caliber was changed to 50-110, and it was shipped as part of order number 22783 on June 14, 1889. The rifle features a casehardened receiver, hammer, lever, buttplate and forend cap. Winchester discontinued the casehardened receiver in 1901. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address and "50 105 EX." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-", and the lower tang is marked with the two line 1884/1885 patent dates directly behind the trigger and with the serial number behind the lever. Replacement blade front sight and adjustable rear sporting sight. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with a steel forend cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. Also included is a copy of the factory ledger, a Cody Firearms Records Office fact sheet, and rarity letter. The latter states that it is one of twenty-two manufactured in .50-105 and located in the factory records, one of three .50 calibers located by collectors in the 24200-25300 range (1888 shipments) and the only one located with the "50-105-EX" marking.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel and magazine tube have traces of original blue with the balance a smooth brown patina with a small amount of minor pitting on the barrel near the muzzle. The bolt retains most of the original bright blue finish with some minor spotting. The receiver shows some strong muted original case colors with a smooth mottled silver gray patina on the balance. The forend cap, buttplate and lever have a smooth mottled silver gray/gray patina. The wood is also very good with scattered minor scuffs, pressure dents and dings. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is very good.
