Description:

The serial number on this Winchester Model 1866 Rifle is in block numerals behind the trigger and is dated to early 1874 but the engraving was applied sometime in the mid-20th Century. The barrel has a German silver blade in a dovetailed base, folding ladder rear sight, the two-line address, and King's improvement marking. The forend cap, receiver, and buttplate are silver plated "gunmetal" and have floral scrollwork and punch dot engraving patterns. The left side of the receiver has "ANTONIO ERRAZURIS ORTUZAR" inscribed on a backdrop of three circular designs. Note that the font is similar to example on page 79 of "The Book of Winchester Engraving" by R. L. Wilson in the section "The Model 1866 & the Ulrichs". The rifle likely belonged to José Antonio Errázuriz (Errazuris) Ortúzar of Chile circa 1831-1891 or a member of his family. The Errázuriz family traces its roots in Chile back to 1735 when Francisco Javier Errázuriz Larraín arrived from Basque Country in Spain. Four presidents of Chile were his descendants. The Ortúzar family also traces its roots in Chile to the 18th century. In the late 19th century Chile was involved in the War of the Pacific with Bolivia and Peru due to a territorial and taxation dispute that ended in Chilean victory and annexation of additional territory including control of the former Bolivian coast. The forearm and straight grip stock are smooth walnut. The trapdoor compartment for the cleaning rod is empty.

Rating Definition:

Good as professionally custom engraved and replated. The barrel and magazine tube have an uneven brown patina. The lever and hammer have traces of case colors. The silvered components have thinned finish and an aged patina. The wood is good with some bruising, scrapes, and small chips. The barrel marking is faint, but the engraving, inscription, and serial number are crisp. One of the screws on the left side of the receiver is set in deep. The action functions fine.
