Description:

The early No. 6 Schuetzen Off-Hand was only manufactured by J. M. Marlin around 1876 and came factory engraved with very rare diamond panel scenes. This example has a spirit level globe front sight and scope mounting blocks on the installed H. M. Pope marked part octagon barrel and has a tang mounted short range vernier peep sight. The underside of the Pope barrel has ".320" just ahead of the forearm, "32-40" at the breech, and a few other markings. The bottom of the forend action has the serial number at the breech, and the left side has the two-line J. M. Marlin address and Ballard's patent marking, and a breech seating pin. The action has scroll and panel scene engraving consisting of a bear on the right and a buck and doe on the left. It is equipped with double set triggers. The forearm is checkered and has a Schnabel style tip with ebony insert and is mounted with an adjustable Ron Long palmrest. The custom high comb, perch belly buttstock is checkered and has a large cheekpiece and Schoyen style buttplate. The second full octagon barrel has a dovetailed mount for the globe front sight, taps for the mounting blocks and marked "Ron Long Denver". It is fitted with its own forearm that matches the one currently on the rifle and has a mount for the palm rest. Also included is a Ron Long style bullet breech seater.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as custom built and refurbished. 98% of the blue finish remains on the H.M. Pope barrel and 85% plus of the lightly faded blue finish remains on the extra barrel. 95% of the fiery case colors and 98% plus of the bright nickel plating remain. The wood is very fine with crisp checkering and some minor scratches and dings. The set triggers need some adjustment. The primary markings and the engraving patterns are crisp. The bullet seater has rich case colors and is in very good condition. This is a gorgeous rifle complete with second barrel by the noted Denver gunsmith, Ron Long.
