Description:

7,163 of these smoothbore carbines were manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, in the mid to late 1830s. Of these 6,135 were .52 caliber. This variant of John H. Hall's design features a sliding bayonet and was used by the 2nd U.S. Dragoons in Florida and by an elite Mobile, Alabama, militia unit. This particular example was manufactured late in production and is marked "U.S./S. NORTH/MIDLTN/CONN./1839" on the breech-block and has an "NWP" inspection mark on the left side at the breech. It has the standard off set blade front and notch rear sights and is fitted with a smooth walnut stock. Four German silver plates in the shapes of stars and shields have been inlaid into the stock (appear period applied).

Rating Definition:

Fair. The carbine has an even dark brown patina overall with some oxidation (particularly on the breech-block) and slight pitting. There are a few dings throughout including at the muzzle. The stock is also fair with various scrapes and pressure marks, a gouge on the left side at the breech, and a few dents. The action functions fine, and the markings are clear.
