Description:

The lock and barrel of this example are dated 1855 which was the final year of Model 1842 production. It is also marked with the standard Springfield markings including the proofmarks on the upper left of the barrel at the breech. It has a trumpet head ramrod, bayonet stud on the bottom of the barrel near the muzzle, blade front sight on the front band, and a nearly full length walnut stock. This example is one of 14,182 Model 1842 muskets altered by the national armories in 1856-1859 by rifling the barrel and adding a long range folding ladder rear sight of the style seen on the Model 1851 cadet muskets. The latter feature was used on just under 10,000 of the converted muskets. The bayonet is marked "US".

Rating Definition:

Good as cleaned with a refinished stock. The metal components are mostly bright with some golden brown oil staining and areas of mild pitting. The stock is fair as sanded and re-oiled with some small cracks and chips along with light scratches. The action is fine, and the markings are clear. The bayonet is very good with a gray patina, light oxidation, and minor pitting.
