This U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Cavalry musketoon was manufactured in 1848-49. It is fitted with the button head ramrod with swivel. The barrel bands, side plate, trigger guard, and buttplate are brass. The full length stock is oil finished black walnut. The lock is stamped "SPRING/FIELD/1848" behind the hammer and has the Springfield eagle and shield motif in front of it. The barrel tang is dated "1849" and the left side of the barrel is stamped with Armory "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks. "U.S." and "ABJ" is handmarked with pin pot incisions on the right side of the butt. The Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoon was the primary long arm of the 1st and 2nd Dragoon Regiments between the Mexican War and the Civil War. Model 1847 Cavalry musketoons continued to be issued to Federal volunteer cavalry regiments well into the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The brass has an aged patina while the remainder of the metal surfaces display a mottled mixture of gray and brown patina with some patches of pitting and cleaning. The markings remain legible. The stock is good with some chips and small cracks. The action functions fine.
