Description:

Circa 1856-1859 the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia converted model 1816 flintlock muskets to the Maynard tape percussion system using 20,000 locks and bolsters manufactured by Remington. Only 2,000 of these converted muskets were specifically produced for the State of New Jersey. This example has an "N.J." marking on the left barrel flat, standard Remington and "1857" markings on the lock plate tail, "1857" and "8" markings on the barrel tang, an unclear "C" type marking on the barrel just ahead of the breech plug, "US" on the buttplate tang with "N/7" just ahead on the comb, a cartouche on the left stock flat, "17" just behind the barrel tang, a blade front sight on the rear section of the upper barrel band, a trumpet head ramrod, and a tompion in the muzzle.

Rating Definition:

Fair with remarked New Jersey marking. The iron surfaces are partially bright with patches of brown patina, spotting, and slight pitting. There are filing marks on the left barrel flat at the breech and an groove in the barrel at the breech plug. The wood is very good with light scratches and pressure marks. The action functions very well, and the markings are mostly distinct.
