Description:

Though they were contracted for 4,000 Model 1808 muskets, only 1,100 were delivered by William and Hugh Shannon of Philadelphia. 18 other contractors also produced these muskets with multiple variations allowing a dedicated collector a large number of muskets to acquire to assemble a complete 1808 contract collection. These muskets are based upon the Model 1795 muskets produced at the Springfield and Harpers Ferry arsenals which themselves also have distinct variations and were used throughout North America in various 19th century conflicts including the Civil War. This example shows influences of the Springfield pattern in the teat on the lock plate which has beveled edges and the Harpers Ferry pattern given the less dramatic comb shape. It has the standard lock markings, single barrel proof, "J.S" behind the trigger guard tang, and additional markings on the left barrel flat. The bayonet is marked with an "N" or "V" at the base of the blade and is the early socket style.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces including the bayonet have an oxidized brown patina overall and various minor marks. There is some rougher corrosion in places most notably on the cock. The stock is very good with some scrapes, dents, and chips. Aside from some of the markings on the left stock flat and the barrel proof, the markings are clear. The lock functions remarkably well given the overall age. This is an attractively aged example of an early American made musket that likely saw use in the War of 1812 and other early American conflicts.
