Description:

31,098 New Model Sharps carbines were converted and reconditioned by Sharps after the Civil War. This example is one of the approximately 27,000 converted to fire the 50-70 centerfire cartridge and fitted with a relined, three groove barrel. It has a German silver blade front sight, folding ladder/notch rear sight graduated to 800 yards, saddle ring and bar on the left side of the action, and the standard New Model 1863 markings (some obscured). It is fitted with a smooth walnut forearm secured by a single barrel band and screw and a straight wrist buttstock without a patch box. Of course 40,000 were also originally produced without a patch box. When these carbines were converted by the factory they were refinished and had parts replaced as needed. The left side of the stock has the correct "DFC" banner cartouche.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. 30% of the thinned Arsenal type refurbished blue finish and strong traces of original case colors remain. There are patches of oxidation throughout including some bright oxidation near the muzzle. The wood is fine with some scrapes and dings and a crack in the butt near the toe. The action functions very well.
