Description:

Introduced near the start of the Civil War, the 1860 Cutlass would be the Navy standard enlisted sword into the 20th century, with reports of American vessels still having them on-board as late as World War II. 32 inches overall, with a 26 inch long curved single fuller blade bearing the Ames scroll on the left ricasso and "U.S.N/D.R./1862" on the right. The hilt is brass construction, with "19M/961" on the underside of the guard, the proper riveted basket guard, a helmet shaped pommel and a ribbed leather grip. With a black leather scabbard outfitted with a brass frog stud and brass and copper rivets, stamped "3M/706" at the throat.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The steel shows a mixed gray patina, with mild spotting and pitting. Heavy hand-sharpening is visible along the true edge, most likely from the period of use. The hilt is good, with a number of dings, dents and scuffs, with several of the dings on the basket appearing to be from impact with a blade. The scabbard is fair, with some cracking and flakes. Though no documentation is included, the sharpening, wear, and impacts would suggest that this sword saw heavy use, possibly in combat, during its service life.
