Description:

Thomas Ketland, his partners, and sons in England were active circa 1778, until the business went bankrupt in 1821. This pair was likely produced circa 1800 and has engraved locks, ramrod entry pipes, and trigger guard. The Damascus barrels have gold bands at the breech, platinum touch hole liners, and are marked with two English proofmarks and "STUBS FINE TWIST" on the bottom. The trigger guards have spur extension, and the walnut stocks have checkered grips and horn forend caps. They have blade and notch sights and single set triggers. As is the case with most dueling pistols, they are smoothbore, given that rifling was banned in the "Code Duello" of many places. The ramrods are ebonized and have brass tips. The pair comes in an English fitted case with a powder flask, oiler, screwdriver, bullet mold, key, larger flint, wads and several lead balls.

Rating Definition:

Good as partially refinished. The barrel has been re-browned and gold banded and has moderate flash pitting at the breech. The lock and other components have an aged patina. The silver wedge escutcheons and thumb piece have a dark aged patina. The wood is good with a small piece absent near the breech above the frizzen spring and above the cock, moderate wear of the checkering and minor marks from handling and storage. The lock and set trigger function very well. The re-lined and refinished case is very good and the accessories are good.
