Description:

The smoothbore, Damascus barrel of this dueling pistol has a short blade front sight, a pair of gold bands at the breech, and a gold inlaid "MORTIMER/LONDON" maker's mark. The vent hole is platinum lined. The upper tang has a notch rear sight. The lock, and the trigger guard have engraving patterns. The lock has a waterproof pan, sliding safety, and a roller frizzen. It is mounted on a checkered walnut half stock with horn forend tip, silver wedge escutcheons, and a silver thumb piece. The pistol was almost certainly part of a cased dueling set containing accessories and at least one pair of pistols for the main combatants and possibly a second smaller pair for the seconds. It was likely manufactured by Henry Walklate Mortimer of London circa the late 18th or early 19th century. Mortimer was among the finest makers of dueling pistols during the height of the use of duels to settle affairs of honor by the upper class throughout Europe and the Americas. Flintlock pistols reached their highest level of precision and design during the first part of his career before many of the improvements were carried over to the percussion system.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The refurbished brown finish on the barrel is mixed with a brown patina, but original Damascus patterns are still visible. The other components are partially bright and display a light gray patina. There is some faint pitting and oxidation. The revarnished stock is fair with crisp checkering, numerous scratches and dings, a minor crack near the forend tip on the left, and a few slight repairs. The lock functions excellently, and the markings are crisp.
