Description:

This dueling pistol has a large, smoothbore Damascus barrel marked with "LONDON" on top and fitted with a post front sight. The breech is casehardened, inlaid with two silver or platinum bands, fitted with a notch rear sight, and has a gold lined touch hole. The upper tang, lock, trigger guard, and edge of the butt are engraved with simple designs. The lock has a waterproof pan with gutters, sliding half cock safety, roller frizzen spring, and an oval inlay marked "HOLLIS." It is equipped with a single set trigger inside of a spurred trigger guard and has a half stock with saw handle shape, checkering on the wrist, silver wedge escutcheons, and silver ovals on the butt and left side. A wooden ramrod with brass tip is fitted below the barrel. This pistol was likely produced by the shop of Richard W. Hollis whose general gunsmith shop was located in London beginning around 1790. The pistol was likely part of a set produced in the Regency era (1811 to 1820) or slightly earlier. In the early 19th century dueling pistols were often significantly more sophisticated than their 18th century counterparts. The use of rifling, set triggers, faster locks, and other improvements meant that more participants were killed. Alexander Hamilton was shot by a pistol with a set trigger though there are claims that he knew of the advantage and chose not to use it, and Aaron Burr was unaware of the mechanism. The increasingly deadly nature of duels helped bring more outcry and legislation against them, but they continued throughout the 19th century. There are even cases of duels as recently as the mid-20th century.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period refinished. The barrel retains 70% of the brown finish and displays distinct Damascus patterns. The breech and lock have a mottled gray patina. The trigger guard and ramrod pipes have a brown patina, and the silver has an aged patina. There are some spots of minor pitting. The lightly sanded stock is very good with crisp checkering and some hairline cracks mostly confined to the forend tip. The lock and set trigger function very well.
