A) Unmarked Pistol

Manufacturer: Unknown
Model: Flintlock
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 60
Barrel: 11 1/2 inch part octagon
Finish: blue/gold
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1491
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 116
Class: Antique
Description:

This pair of pistols was likely produced in Europe in the late 18th century for the Middle Eastern trade and or in the Ottoman Empire based upon the six pointed star in the crescent moon (hilal) designs among the silver stock ornamentation and the gold inlays on the barrel and lock. Note that the six pointed star is correct for the Middle East prior to the 1790s when the five pointed star was first adopted as part of the Ottoman flag. The earlier version had been used in the region since prehistoric times and relates to the use of the moon and stars when travelling through the desert at night and the importance of the new moon in the ancient lunar calendars. No proof or maker's marks are visible. The blade front sights are absent from the part round barrels which have a wedding band transition, and there are golden dished rear sights on the barrel tangs. They have short display ramrods. The full length stocks have elaborate silver mounts and wire inlays with a variety of floral designs.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Most of the gold inlay remains with mostly distinct designs. The balance of the iron surfaces has a brown patina with oxidation and light pitting. Brass is showing through on the furniture, but all of the stock mounts and wire inlay remain. The stock itself is very good with a few insect holes, a slight crack at the forend on the left, and minor marks. The lock is fine.
