Description:

The barrel is marked "London" in script on top and has a pair of cross scepter proofmarks on the upper left flat. The breech has a lightly engraved border design. The lock also has a light border and is marked "Bunney" in script below the pan. The top of the barrel has a spring bayonet and corresponding locking stud. The muzzle is just under 1 3/8 inches across, and the bore is approximately 16 gauge. The full length stock has a checkered and dot pattern at the wrist and brass buttplate. It includes a ramrod with brass tip. The Bunney shop opened in 1730 and remained open under control of three generations until 1815. This blunderbuss would have been very useful for a sailor, privateer, or pirate. The initial blast of buckshot would have been devastating to any in its path and anyone still charging forward could be dealt with using the bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially refinished. The brass displays a lightly aged patina with a few strike marks and a flash mark at the touch hole. The lock and bayonet have a brown patina with some light pitting. The stock is good as sanded and repaired with partially smoothed tear drop flats, and some minor marks and scratches. The front barrel pin is absent. The lock needs some work, but is complete. This is a solid example of an 18th century blunderbuss.
