William Abnett of Windsor worked from 1790 through 1837 at 104 Peascod Street. See Heer Der Neue Stockel page 2. The pistols have brightly blued octagonal barrels with engraving at muzzles, lines and drapery, and the top flats inscribed "W. ABNETT, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY / WINDSOR." The bottom flats are mounted with swivel ramrods. The sides of the frames are finely scroll engraved, and the hammers area engraved with eyes and fish scales. The top straps are also engraved. They feature safeties, folding triggers, and varnished checkered walnut grips mounted with German silver bands and vacant escutcheon plates on butts. Additional vacant silver escutcheon plates are behind the top straps. The pair comes in a mahogany case lined in deep green velvet with contoured partitions and containing a wood handled turn-screw (marked by Halgreaves, Smith & Co. Sheffield, fine cutlery and tool makers formed in 1859), pewter oil vessel, Eley’s Double Waterproof Percussion Caps (green label), Dixon & Sons bag-shaped powder flask 4/8 to 6/8 grams and 85-bore ball mold with sprue cutter.

Rating Definition:

Fine retaining 60% of the original bright, high polish blue finish on the barrel with areas near the nipple exhibiting staining due to firing, some light marks and areas of light patina. The balance of the barrel, mostly the right side, has a dark grey patina. The grip has the expected light marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. The relined case is fine with a cracked lid, a later replacement turn screw, powder flask with some patina and a broken spring, and mold with dark patina overall.
