Description:

This pepperbox is the ribbed barrel variant manufactured by Samuel E. Robbin and Richard S. Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont. It has the standard factory scroll engraving, small post front sight, notch in the latch for a rear sight, and smooth rosewood grips. The upper left rib is marked "WINDSOR. VT.," and the upper right rib is marked "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO." The bottom rib is marked "LEONARDS PATENT. 1849." The serial number "434" is on the cocking trigger, rear of the barrel group (along with "1304"), left side of the back strap, and the underside of the grips. The design is different than others of the era in that it uses a non-rotating barrel, group drops downward like a break action for capping and unscrews from the breech section for loading the powder and balls, has a concealed revolving hammer mechanism, a ring trigger for cocking, and a second outer curved trigger for firing. Robbins & Lawrence pepperboxes were among the most popular before Colt revolutionized the firearms industry. The pistol comes in a hardwood case with fitted interior, "ROBBINS AND LAWRENCE CO/PATENT REVOLVING HAMMER PISTOL/WINDSOR VT" marked small powder flask, several lead balls, a ball mold, combination barrel wrench and ramrod, and Eley cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel group has a blend of 40% original brown finish, brown patina, and some small spots of oxidation. The action has traces of original blue finish and an even brown patina along with a few small patches of oxidation. The grips are very good with only a few minor marks and dent. The action functions but regularly does not lock up properly. The original case is fine overall with mild storage wear including some fading and staining of the lining. The accessories are also fine.
