A) G. Hume Pistol

Manufacturer: European
Model: Percussion
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 65
Barrel: 8 inch flat top round
Finish: brown/casehardened/blue
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 3124
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 122
Class: Antique
Description:

Both pistols have European style scrollwork engraving and are marked "G. HUME" on the lock plates and "G. HUME DUMFRIES" on the barrels. George Hume of Dumfries, Scotland, styled himself as a gunmaker (and is listed as such in "MacDonalds Scottish Directory and Gazetteer 1897-1898") but by most accounts was a retailer. He may be a descendant of the George Hume who taught a young Virginian by the name of George Washington the finer points of surveying. Hume died in Culpeper, Virginia, which was surveyed by Washington and the inspiration for the famous Culper Spy Ring's name. The pistols also feature post front sights, Damascus barrels, fish head engraved hammers, swivel ramrods, full length checkered walnut stocks with horn forend caps and engraved buttcaps with cap compartments, and have Birmingham proofmarks on the underside of the barrels. They come in an English fitted hardwood case with a bore rod, six lead balls, bullet mold, measure, and oiler.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains traces of the original brown finish and visible Damascus patterns. The lock similarly has faint case colors. The trigger guard and ramrod entry pipe have traces of original blue finish. The balance has gray and brown patina, patches of mild pitting, and spots of oxidation. The stock is very good with sharp checkering, strong oil finish, and minor marks including white paint specks. The markings are legible, and the action is fine. The relined case is good with mild storage wear overall and some cracking/separation. The accessories are fair to fine.

B) G. Hume Pistol

Manufacturer: European
Model: Percussion
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 65
Barrel: 8 inch flat top round
Finish: brown/casehardened/blue
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 3124
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 122
Class: Antique
Description:

As discussed in A.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Very similar condition to gun A but with stronger finish. 30% plus of the original brown finish remains on the barrel and at least as much of the case colors and original blue finish remain on the other components. The Damascus pattern is distinct. There are patches of mild pitting and light oxidation. The wood is very good with sharp checkering, minor pressure marks, and some white specks. The forend cap is missing most of it's left side. The action functions fine, and the markings are legible.
