Description:

The right French style lock plate of each pistol is marked "J. G. DACHTINE-A-AIX", and the left plates are marked "LA CHAPELLE". Aix la Chapelle is the French name for the German border town of Aachen on the borders with the Netherlands and Belgium (the Dutch name is Aken). The town was the capital of Charlemagne's empire; he laid the foundation for France and the Germanic states in the early Middle Ages. The town was the traditional location of the coronation of German kings. France controlled the town from 1801 to 1815. Some sources list a "J.G. Dachtine" using the above marking as early as 1750 or prior. At least one of his weapons is known to have carried the coat of arms of a German noble, and these fine pistols certainly would be fit for a gentleman. The pistols have dished sights at the breech end of the rifled barrel groups, bright locks, brass furniture, trumpet head ramrods, and full length stocks with tear drop flat extensions and raised relief carving at the breeches and ahead of the engraved trigger guard finials. The buttcaps also have small engraved finials and borders.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains traces of faded original brown finish mixed with a brown patina while the locks have been cleaned to bright, and the brass has a genuine aged patina. There are scrapes of the frizzens from use and some slight oxidation on the barrels. The ramrod pipe has a chip absent. The stock is fine with crisp carving, minor pressure marks and abrasions, a few dents, and a chip at the front of the left lock plate. The locks function excellently, and the markings are clear.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrels have traces of the thinned original brown finish and gray and brown patina. There is some light oxidation. The locks are cleaned bright with strike marks on the frizzens and some faint pitting. The brass has an honest aged patina. The stock is fine with some minor cracking at the forend, crisp carving, minor dings and light scratches, and some chipping below the left lock. The locks function excellently, and the markings are distinct.
