Description:

Measuring 3 3/8 inches in diameter and nearly a quarter inch thick at the edge, this tsuba is of brass construction with areas selectively darkened or polished for accents. The top face shows a well sculpted rendering of a traditional seated great buddha, which nearly doubles the thickness of the tsuba in it's location, with a polished circular halo round the head and a bright dot of contrasting metal in the third eye/6th chakra position on the forehead; this dot is the only non-brass component of the tsuba. The left side, opposite the buddha, is decorated with carved grass, a raised bird in flight, and a 2-symbol signature near the center. A consignor-supplied translation states the signature is "Miboku", a shared handle used by some members of the Hamano school, established in the 17th century and seen as late as the 19th. The rear face of the tsuba is decorated with a sharply sculpted tree, with the main body of the trunk being cut into the surface and the branches and flowers raised up. Included with the tsuba is a padded transport and display case, with hinged doors and a folding stand on the rear.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with a mixed aged patina, wear on the bright edges, and some minor handling marks. The sculpting is all quite excellent, with very fine detail throughout. The case is very fine with the stand hinge in need of repair, a replacement front latch, and some mild stains.
