Description:

Originally operating in Edinburgh in a partnership with his brother John, Daniel Fraser went his own way circa 1889, and his firm stayed in business into the 1930s. In configuration, the rifle shows a great deal of Mauser influence, particularly in the receiver configuration and safety setup, with elements of Enfield in the inner workings of the bolt, and combined with a proprietary Fraser trigger arrangement and a takedown style consisting of a simple thumb screw on the receiver ring and a shotgun-style latch on the forearm, allowing the barrel to be rapidly mounted or dismounted by hand. Raised bead front and 3-leaf rear sights, with a flip-up high profile night bead in front, a white triangle inlay in the 100 yard leaf, platinum wires in the 200 and 300 leaves, London proofs on the left side of the chamber and "DANl FRASER & CO./GUN & RIFLE MANUFACTURERS/4 LEITH ST. TERRACE EDINBURGH." on top. The receiver is finely engraved with scroll and floral patterns, with a Parker-Hale bolt-mounted peep sight, "butterknife" bolt handle, and "FITTED WITH/ FRASER'S PATENT/TRIGGER ACTION" on the rear ring. Finely checkered Schnabel tip forearm and pistol grip stock with a horn grip cap, shadow-line cheekpiece, and deeply checkered horn buttplate. With a leather reinforced case sleeve marked "EARL CAIRNS" on a leather tag, a leather bound hard case with "THE RIGHT HONble EARL CAIRNS" in gold-washed branding on the lid and tags from Fraser and the Earl Cairns on the interior, a small screwdriver, one dummy round and one clip. The tag from Cairns is dated 1929. The Earl Cairns in 1929 was Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Dallas Cairns, 4th Earl Cairns, 4th Baron Cairns of Garmoyle, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset, Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and combat veteran of the Boer War and the First World War. Originally created for Wilfred's father, noted conservative statesman Hugh Cairns, the family titles were held by Wilfred from 1905 to 1946 and are today held by his grandson, the 6th Earl Cairns.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 90% of the high polish blue finish showing some bright wear along the muzzle and high edges and minor handling marks overall. The wood shows a few light scuffs and dings overall along with a tiny crack behind the upper tang but also shows a superb fancy walnut grain pattern. The case cover shows wear and tear appropriate to age and use, and the hard case shows mild scuffs and stains, particularly on the inner labels. The screwdriver appears to be a later replacement. Mechanically excellent.
