Manufactured in 1921, this side lock Purdey & Sons shotgun features blue barrels, break lever and trigger guard and casehardened frame and locks. There is a single bead sight on the solid matte rib. It is marked "J. PURDEY & SONS AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON, ENGLAND" on top of the left barrel near the breech reading breech to muzzle and "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH FLUID PRESSED STEEL" on the right. The barrels are chamber 2 3/4", choked modified/improved modified, and have ejectors. The flats are marked with the gauge and various proofmarks. The action, locks, trigger guard and break lever feature fine English scroll with rose bouquet engraving. The locks are marked "J. PURDEY & SONS.", and the bottom of the frame is marked "J. PURDEY & SONS/LONDON". The water table is marked with two "crown/V" proofmarks. Cocking indicators, double triggers and automatic tang mounted safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Mounted with an extra fancy, nicely figured, multi-point checkered, English walnut splinter forearm with scroll engraved hardware and straight grip stock with tear drop flats, leather wrapped recoil pad and gold initial oval inscribed "C. G.". The length of pull is 14 1/2 inches. Very fine as period refurbished with 97% blue finish remaining on the barrels showing some muzzle wear and light handling marks. 98% blue finish remains on the trigger guard with some edge wear, and 95% blue finish remains on the break lever. The frame has a smooth gray patina with faded case colors in protected areas. The locks retain most of the bright case colors. The reoiled wood is very good with a few minor dings and dents. The checkering is crisp. The markings and engraving are clear. Mechanically excellent.
