Description:

This was a standard WWI issue DWM Luger that was originally manufactured in 1915 and was subsequently Arsenal reworked. It has the unique "Death's Head/Lazy S" stamp over the chamber date. Several different theories have been offered as to what this insignia actually means. Initially they were thought to have been issued to WWI Strossstrupps or assault unit that utilized early Flame-Throwers, then it was early German Imperial Tank units, or early post war, Nazi Totenkopf/SS unit insignia or even early concentration camp guards. However there has been no definitive data discovered to support any of these theories, so the mystery remains. The chamber is dated 1915 and it has the standard "DWM", marked front toggle. The stylized "Death's Head/lazy S" mark is stamped over the date. It has the standard WWI Imperial inspection/acceptance and firing proofs on the right side of the barrel extension. In addition it has been fitted with a new commercial barrel in 9mm that has been stamped with a Commercial "Crown/N" proof on the under side along with the same proof on the right side of the barrel extension; obviously intended as a commercial sales luger. The barrel is unnumbered and is marked with the commercial proof and bore diameter 8,8 m/m. It has the standard fixed sight with the "GESICHERT and GELADEN" marked, safety and extractor. It has a single unmarked nickel plated magazine with an aluminum base stamped "8142".

Rating Definition:

Very good as refinished with 75% of the 1930's era Mauser Oberndorf style commercial blue finish still remaining overall. The smaller parts retain 20% of their straw colors. The side plate is a renumbered, refinished replacement. The walnut grips are in very good condition overall with nice visible checkering overall with the checking on the lower left side having been refreshed. This unique luger has matching numbered parts with the side plate renumbered and the noted magazine.
