Description:

This is an absolutely fabulous example of a very rare and desirable WWII German M30 Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle manufactured by the J. P. Sauer and Sohn that was issued to the German Kriegsmarine. The M30 Drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater and was intended to provide a high quality survival weapon in the event of a forced landing. These are a three-barreled combination gun consisting of two 12 gauge shotgun barrels over a 9.3X74R rifled barrel. All these drilling rifles exhibit the beautiful, pre-war, high quality workmanship that the J. P. Sauer and Sohn was noted for. They exhibit a high polish rust blued metal finish on the barrel, sling swivels and barrel release lever with a beautiful color casehardened finish on the receiver, trigger guard and forend latching mechanism that is combined with a hand checkered European walnut pistol grip stock and forearm that have a hand rubbed oil finish. The quality of the fit and finish on these weapons rivals anything that was produced in the U.S. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark, and the underside of each barrel has the Commercial "Eagle/N" proofmarks, along with the ultra-rare small, stamped "Eagle/M" Navy proofmark indicating issuance to the German Kriegsmarine. The underside of each barrel is marked with the appropriate bore and gauge/caliber markings "12/65" and is stamped "6 42" for the month and year of manufacture. Both shotgun barrels and the rifle barrel are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The serial number, "338394", is located on the underside of the rifle barrel, on the left receiver rail and on the very end of the trigger guard tang. The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle" mark carrying the Nazi swastika. The barrel has a matted rib with brass bead front sight. This drilling has a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. The top left edge of the receiver rail is marked with the matching serial number "338394" with the intertwined "SS" proof for Sauer & Sohn along with the Commercial Eagle "N" firing proof on the right side. Both sides of the receiver are marked with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL", and a larger intertwined "SS" logo is on the underside of the receiver. The stock has a small European oval cheekpiece, a casehardened pistol grip cap, and a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined Sauer & Sohn "SS" logo in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a large prominent "Luftwaffe Eagle/swastika" insignia. The partial serial number "8394" is stamped on top of the metal attaching iron, inside of the forearm. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch and is marked directly behind that with a small "W./St.". When engaged, the rifle barrel selector raises a folding 100 meter rear sight on the rib and engages the forward trigger. The front trigger can be pushed forward to activate a "single set" trigger. This drilling has a diminutive high quality scroll engraving on the receiver, trigger guard, and engraved screw heads, and the forearm and pistol grip are finely checkered. The drilling is packed in an aluminum carrying case that has the dark gray/black painted exterior with a very small "Eagle/2 Luftwaffe stick Eagle" proof on the very front directly above the carrying handle. This is the only Luftwaffe case that this describer has even seen. The inside lid of the carrying case contains a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling, ammunition, cleaning equipment and sling. The rifle also includes an original leather sling, an original three section wooden cleaning rod with a brass jag, four different bore brushes and two bore mops all in the original black cardboard box, an original copy of the WWII factory manual, three boxes of RWS 9.3 X 74R hunting ammunition, (approximately 26 rounds total), one box of approximately 25 round of Rottweil 12 gauge shotgun ammunition and two boxes of Rottweil Brennekegeschoss rifled shotgun shells, (approximately 13 round total).

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the original blued finish overall with a hint of wear on the edges. The receiver trigger guard bow, forend attaching iron and grip cap all retain 95% plus of the original case colors fading slightly on the rear of the trigger guard bow and grip cap. The case colors on the receiver are deep and rich and are probably the best case colors we have seen in some time. The forend and stock are both very fine with nice original colors overall and sharp, distinct checkering. The only thing keeping the wood from being excellent is that the side of the buttstock shows some spotting, probably from some solvents accidentally splashed on it. A master restorer could correct this easily as it has not been altered or sanded. The various accessories are all in excellent condition and the metal storage case shows 95% of the exterior painted finish. Just a fabulous all original WWII German Navy proofed Luftwaffe M30 Drilling rifle complete set !
