Description:

Measuring 37 inches long, this sword has no visible makers marks, with the 32 inch blade showing a fine etched Damascus steel pattern overall, along with a set of wide double fullers that cover both sides. The guard is gilt brass, with a cut-through scroll pattern and further engraved embellishments, a wire wrapped sharkskin grip, and a lion-head pommel An engraved design is present on the guard, with a muzzle-loading cannon and stack of cannonballs in the center, surrounded by a belt/garter marked "TREU UND WAHR (faithful & true)/FRIEDRICH VOGT". Vogt has not been positively identified; there was a chronicler of the city of Swabisch Gmund by that name in the 1600s, as well as Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt, the infamous "Captain of Koepenick" who conned a small town out of 4000 marks with a cobbled-together officer's uniform, a group of enlisted men he picked up at random, and an bottomless reservoir of chutzpa. With a nickel plated brass scabbard, fitted with gilt throat, suspension bands and tip along with an iron drag.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade show some light nicks along the edge, minor spotting, and a gray patina. Over 85% of the gilt finish is present on the hilt, with well aged brass visible in the exposed areas, and the grip shows light wear and retains all of the tightly fitted wire. The scabbard is also fine, with 70% of the nickel finish and some light dings and dents.
