Description:

Manufactured in 1912, Navy-marked 1911s are very scarce; only the very first years of production distinguished between Army and Navy acquisitions, and from World War I on all military-issue 1911s bore "U.S. ARMY" marks regardless of their intended end-user. Made in limited numbers, the Navy-marked 1911s saw hard use at sea and at war, and many were later overhauled with Army-marked slides or had 1911A1 parts added. Fitted with blade front and rounded notch rear sights, the two-line/two-block address and patent marks are on the left side of the slide with the circled Rampant Colt behind the serrations and "MODEL OF 1911. U.S. NAVY" (with serifs) on the right side. The frame bears Walter G. Penfield's "WGP" inspector mark near the magazine catch, "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" on the front left, and "No.6799" on the reverse. Fitted with a wide checkered hammer, long smooth trigger, short grip safety, smooth lanyard base mainspring housing, and checkered grips with diamond patterns around the screws. Two extra magazines are included; all three magazines have pinned bases and no makers marks.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 30% of the original blue finish, concentrated on the frame and small parts, with bright edge wear, a few light scratches, and scattered handling marks overall. The slide and grip straps show a bright gray patina overall, with some shallow pitting, some scuffs are present on the left side of the trigger and trigger guard, as well as a takedown line from the slide stop. Grips are fair with chips and flat spots. Mechanically excellent. Original examples of the U.S. Navy marked Colt 1911 pistol are scarce in any condition, and represents a significant milestone for a truly advanced collection of Colt pistols or American military handguns.
