Description:

This is a representative example of a WWI Colt Model 1911 U.S. Army contract pistol that was manufactured in 1917. This pistol has the correct block style letters with serifs and a Colt brushed blue, military type finish. The left side of the slide has the standard Colt factory two-line, two-block markings with the Rampant Colt behind the slide serrations. The right side is marked "MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY". The left side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" with the initials "GHS" for the U.S. Ordnance inspector Major Gilbert H. Stewart above the magazine release. The right side is stamped with the serial number "166486". The pistol retains the correct original WWI parts such as the checkered Colt wide spur hammer, flat main spring housing, checkered slide stop and thick type III thumb safety. It is fitted with a WWI blued Colt barrel, that is marked with only a "P" and a "5" proof on the underside of the barrel with no other proof marks. It is fitted with a set of original WWI, diamond pattern checkered walnut grips with the left grip having the initials "SAR" lightly carved into the left side. It is complete with commercial (non-Colt) replacement magazine.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 70% of the blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear and blue loss on the front edges of the slide, the front and rear grip straps. The chamber area of the barrel has also been polished. The grips are also in very good condition with nice visible checkering on both sides showing honest wear across the tops of the checkering. It mechanically functions but needs attention as it doesn't stay on safe when the trigger is pulled.
