Description:

Early production caliber .30-03 M1903 Springfield modified between 1906 and 1909 to chamber the .30-06 cartridge. Between November 1906 and early 1909, Springfield Armory modified nearly 270,000, unissued .30-03 rifles to chamber the .30-06 cartridge adopted in October 1906. The conversion involved shortening and modification of stocks, barrels and handguards and replacement of rear sights and other components. Modified components were incorporated randomly in the conversion process. This rifle is a typical M1903 altered from .30-03 to .30-06; the receiver was originally installed on a caliber .30-03, 1905 pattern M1903 rifle. The stock was altered from a 1904 production Rod Bayonet rifle. The rod bayonet hole has been filled, and the forend is marked "S". The stock has no reinforcing bolts. The barrel is the original .30-03 barrel rechambered to .30-06 and marked "SA/Ordnance Bomb/05" behind the front sight. The receiver is marked: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/MODEL 1903/50705". In the small format lettering, the left side of the stock wrist is stamped with a Roman "V" followed by the script "JSA/1904" final inspection stamp in a rectangle. The bolt has small "S" stamped on the bottom of the safety lug. The trigger is smooth. The rear sight is a M1905 pattern graduated to 2,450 yards. The safety is a replacement which is unmarked on the top and marked "S" on the bottom. The rifle has the early smooth buttplate and later 1/2" diameter dished windknob.

Rating Definition:

Very good. 20% of the faded original finish remains on the barrel. The bolt and bolt handle retain 40% of the blue finish. The remaining metal components are worn to a smooth grayish/brown mottled patina. The stock and handguard are both very good with scattered minor scratches, gouges and pressure dents. The cartouches on the left side wrist are faint but for the most part readable. The stock has been arsenal reoiled and shows some darker areas. Mechanically excellent.
