Description:

This is a very nice example with an original M1D sniper. These rifles were actually standard M1 Rifles that were converted by either depots or arsenals into sniper configuration by replacing the barrel with a special M1D sniper barrel. These barrels were produced only at Springfield Armory by taking a new production barrel and during the original manufacture installing a heavy steel block on the rear portion of the barrel to mount a sniper scope. The barrels were produced from Jan 1952 through Feb 1953. This rifle is a 1943 production weapon that has a mix of both WWII and post-war Springfield Armory parts (which is correct for these models). The barrel is marked "SA-1-52" making it one of the first in the production run and probably has the drawing number located under the rear handguard on top of the barrel. It was probably originally converted for Korean war use. The right receiver leg is marked "TE-1-69" which stands for inspection or refinish at Tooele Army depot, Jan 1969. The walnut stock has a single circle "P" proof and probably under the cheek piece it has a depot overhaul cartouche. The stock has a leather lace on cheek piece which is marked "MRT 11-62" and an original green canvas sling. The rifle is complete with an original M84 Telescope, number 2152 and an original T-37 prong type flashider.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished overall with 98% of the late gray GI parkerized finish and only minor wear on the right side of the receiver rail, the top of the bolt and the bottom of the barrel from cycling the action. The M84 scope has 98% original blue finish with excellent optics and a nice rubber eyepiece. The stock and handguards are in fine condition showing a nice medium brown color with only some very minor handling marks on the stock from normal field use.
