Description:

Underneath the left grip panel just behind the cylinder latch the revolver is signed "Eng by R.J. Smith '68." The included factory packing list indicates the revolver was sold to the Williams Gun Sight Co. and shipped to Les Doubleday at the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory in East Lansing Michigan on February 29, 1968. The description of the gun reads: "1 M57 41 MAG 6 8 TH TT/SMOOTH ROSEWOOD STOCKS/FOR MERVE COTES/CLASS A ENGRAVING 307.81/M.S.C. SCRIPT ON TRIGGER GUARD." The last comment's significance is unclear given the trigger guard has the same leafy scroll engraving that covers over 90% of the revolver. The factory receipt has slightly different details. It states it was "SOLD AND/OR SHIPPED TO" the State of Michigan, Department of State Police in East Lansing. It lists the serial number and "M57 6[inch] Blue Engraved 41 Magnum/ [with] smooth rosewood target. Stocks." The grips on the gun have full coverage relief scroll engraving, silver S&W medallions, and scrimshawed diamond shaped screw escutcheons. It features standard S&W markings among the engraving patterns, a ramped blade front sight with red insert, adjustable target rear sight with "U" highlight, serrated hammer, and a checkered wide spur hammer. Lester E. Doubleday (1924-2007) served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war he was a member of the Battle Creek Police Department from 1947-1954 and then joined the Michigan State Police. He was a member of the Michigan State Police's shooting team for many years including in 1966 when the organization won 4 titles. Doubleday had previously shot a perfect 200 in the Indiana State Police Matches on October 5, 1958, setting a national police record for .45 caliber rapid fire. He was the supervisor for firearms training and the department's ordinance department armorer prior to his retirement in January 1980. He handmade off-duty holsters for many new officers. He also taught firearms courses at multiple community college. The revolver comes in a wooden case with a blue lined fitted interior and a compartment with cleaning tools.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. 99% plus. The revolver has only some storage marks and a light cylinder drag line. The grips are near excellent with a small chip near the heel of the back strap and otherwise crisp carving and only light handling and storage marks. The action is smooth and excellent. The engraving patterns are nice and crisp, and the markings are clear. The case is very good with minor storage wear.
