An included message from a records specialist at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center indicates the rifle has its serial number applied on April 20, 1892, and was received in the warehouse on May 13. The records list: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 44 (crossed out), Barrel: Octagon, Trigger: Plain" and that it was back in the warehouse on August 13, 1892, and changed to .38 caliber and shipped back out two days later. The order number is listed as 3108. It has a pinched copper blade front sigh, adjustable notch sporting rear sight, standard octagon barrel, and full length magazine. The upper left barrel flat is stamped with the two line address marking ahead of the rear sight, and "38 W.C.F." is at the breech. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/PAT. OCT.14.1884." The three digit serial number is stamped on the underside of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a metal forend cap and crescent buttplate.

Fair as factory altered (see above). The rifle mottling to a smooth silver gray patina finish with scattered scratches, dings and brown speckling. There are sanding marks present on right side of receiver. The revarnished wood is fair with scattered scratches, dings and pressure dents and a few small sliver absent at the toe of the stock. Mechanically fine.
