Description:

The Winchester Model 1895's box magazine was Browning's last Winchester lever action design and his most modern. It incorporated a fixed box magazine that allowed for the use of pointed bullets and a tough action capable of handling large calibers. The Model 1895 was an instant hit and earned a favorable review from Theodore Roosevelt who used two during his African safari after having experience using others during the Spanish-American War; his son brought along two more. This Model 1895 manufactured in 1896 and has the flat side receiver used on under 6,000 rifles before the design was changed to reduce weight. Many of these early rifles no longer exist. This example is equipped with a pinned blade front sight and adjustable sporting rear sight and is mounted with a smooth forearm with ebony insert in the Schnabel tip and a smooth replacement buttstock. It has the standard early markings.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Traces of original blue finish remain. The balance displays a mottled gray patina with slight pitting and spotting. The sanded/revarnished wood is also fair with a few slight chips and handling marks. The action functions very well, and the markings are crisp.
