Description:

This is a prototype bottom feed lever action rifle similar in design to the Model 1895. The rifle has a marking for the famed Utah based Winchester retailer Browning Brothers but lacks formal Winchester markings. Browning Brothers, the predecessor of Browning Arms Co. (established in 1927), formed in 1872 in Ogden, Utah. The Browning family had been active gunsmiths and dealers in Ogden since as early as 1852. The barrel is marked "BROWNING BROS. OGDEN, UTAH, U.S.A." (double stamped) ahead of the rear sight and "30 U.S." at the breech. The underside of the barrel under the forearm has a Winchester "VP" oval proof. These are the only markings. The rifle has a sliding thumb safety, concealed hammer, pinned blade front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight and crescent buttplate. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock featuring a Schnabel forend.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains an overall left in the white bright appearance with traces of original case colors on the buttplate. The stock is excellent with limited chipping around the upper tang and a few minor pressure dents. Mechanically functions fine but has no feed mechanism. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
