Description:

Approximately 20,000 of these revolvers were manufactured in 1861 and 1862. 11,984 were purchased by the government for the U.S. Army and Navy with the remainder sold on the open market. The six-shot revolver featured a unique ring-trigger action in which the ring trigger revolved the cylinder and cocked the hammer. The revolver was fired with a second trigger which fitted in the curved arm of the lower trigger. This example has a possibly period custom engraving and is one of the commercial guns without inspection markings. The floral scroll and dot engraving is featured on the cylinder, frame, back strap and butt with wedges of the engraving on the barrel at the muzzle and breech. The loading lever has a wavy line engraving. A floral engraving appears on the top strap along with the address/patent marking: "SAVAGE R.F.A. Co. MIDDLETOWN. CT./H.S.NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856/JANUARY 18 1859. MAY 15 1860." The serial number is stamped on the right side of the grip frame under the grip panel. It has brass cone front and notch rear sights. The two piece grip is highly figured rosewood with a high gloss finish. The back strap has provisions for a shoulder stock, which is included. The stock has nickel plated hardware that is marked "ALSOP/PAT" inside a shield and crescent buttplate (scrollwork on tang). The revolver has a threaded hole in the back strap to accept the shoulder stock mount. Savage Navy Model revolvers with a detachable stock are seldom encountered.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% replated nickel finish with loss concentrated on the back strap and butt. The grips are very fine showing some minor pressure dents and scratches with most of the refinished varnish remaining. Mechanically functions but is slightly out of time. The shoulder stock is also very fine with 85% replated nickel finish and some minor handling marks on the wood. Truly a unique, possibly period engraved Savage Navy Model Revolver with scarce detachable Alsop patent shoulder stock. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
