Description:

Only 1,000 New Model Army revolvers were purchased by the State of New Jersey during the Civil War. This example has the standard markings and features, including "NJ" stamps at the breech on the left side of the barrel and left side of the frame above the trigger guard and matching serial numbers on the barrel, grip frame, and grips. The Remington New Model Army was the main competitor to Colt's Model 1860 Army during the Civil War and was the primary model purchased after Colt's factory fire. They were easier to reload, safer, and more robust than the Colts and thus were well received by the troops. Many saw hard use during the war and into the late 19th century. Outlaws, lawmen, soldiers, settlers, Indians, and more all found Remington's revolvers suitable for their purposes. The butt has a scratched "Leys" marking.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 40% of the original blue finish remains, mostly on the cylinder, and the balance has deep brown patina and some oxidation. The grips are very good and have chipping along the bottom of the left panel and refreshed varnish. The action functions fine, and the markings are mostly crisp.
