Description:

Model 1863 rifle manufactured by the Remington Arms Co. in 1863. This rifle has a heavy, 33 inch, round barrel with a lug for a sword bayonet on the right side, a dovetail mounted wide base front sight and a folding leaf rear sight graduated for 500, 300 and 100 yards. The rifle is fitted with a steel, straight shank, tulip head ramrod. The barrel band springs and sights are blue. The lock and hammer are color casehardened. The forearm cap, barrel bands, trigger guard, patch box and buttplate are brass. The straight grain black walnut stock has an oil finish. The lock plate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and roll stamped with a federal eagle and shield over "U.S." followed by "REMINGTON'S/ILLION N.Y." in front of the hammer. The top of the barrel is dated "1863" on the center line and stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks on the left side. The left barrel flat is stamped "STEEL" followed by a "H.S.L." sub-inspection mark. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate. The left stock flat is stamped with script "HSL" and "BH" Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks. Single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. This rifle is all original and retains nearly all of the blue and color casehardened finish. This rifle appears to be as issued and un-fired. The wear on this rifle is attributable to 153 years of storage and occasional handling. The barrel retains about 98% of the blue finish but has scattered spots of age discoloration and surface rust. All of the barrel markings are crisp. The lock plate, hammer and trigger retain nearly all of the strong case colors and are partially covered with packing grease. The lock markings are crisp. The brass buttplate, patch box, trigger guard and barrel bands have not been polished and have developed a mottled aged patina. The exposed portions of the ramrod have a dark patina while the protected areas retain the original bright finish. The stock has raised grain and sharp edges. Both of the Ordnance inspection marks on the left flat are legible. The stock has scattered, minor, dents and scratches accumulated during 150 plus years of storage but remains in excellent condition overall. This is an attractive, as issued and un-fired example of a Remington Model 1863 "Zouave" rifle.
