A scarce example of the 1000 Model 1863 Double Rifle Muskets manufactured by J.P. Lindsay 1863-65. This unique weapon featured two percussion hammers, two percussion nipples and two chambers with a single barrel that fired two superimposed charges using a single trigger. At least some M1863 Double Rifles were issued to Federal troops during the Civil War. The barrel, lock and iron furniture are finished "National Armory Bright" and the stock is oil finished walnut. The barrel is marked: "LINDSAY/PATENT'D. OCT.9.1860 on the breech top and the heel of the buttplate is marked "U.S". The script "ADK" and "ADH" Ordnance inspector's initials are stamped on the left flat surrounded by ovals.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel, lock and iron furniture have been lightly cleaned. There is some minor pitting on the left side of the hammer. The stock is in very fine condition with excellent Ordnance inspection marks and some edge wear on the left flat and around the lock mortise and a coat of preventative applied overall. Markings are sharp. A scarce and outstanding example of an unusual Civil War martial arm.
