Description:

The 5th Model variation of the Burnside carbine was the most widely used during the Civil War. Approximately 43,000 were manufactured between 1863 and 1865. It was based on George P. Foster's improvements of General Ambrose E. Burnside's designs. Like the Fourth Model, it has a pivoting breechblock that allows for much easier loading. It also has the addition of a guide screw that aides in smoother operation. This example has a "pinched" blade front sight, notch and folding leaf rear sight (graduated for 100, 300, and 500 yards), "BURNSIDE'S PATENT/MODEL OF 1864" on the top of the action, matching serial numbers at the breech, and two boxed cartouches on the left side of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel has a mixture of faded original blue finish blended with brown patina and speckled oxidation. Parts of the action have bright niter blue finish, and the remaining have dark gray and brown patina with faint traces of original case colors. The markings are generally clear throughout. The buttstock is fine and has some minor hairline cracks at the tail of the lock and some minor dings and scratches. The forearm is fair and have heavy scrapes and dents. The lock functions fine, and the breech mechanism operates smoothly.
