Description:

This carbine was originally used as a standard New Model 1863 percussion carbine in the latter part of the Civil War and was then converted for the U.S. Government during Reconstruction. Many of these carbines were then used during the Indian Wars prior to the adoption of the Springfield Trapdoors. It fires the .50-70 centerfire cartridge and retains its original 6 groove bore. This variation is sometimes referred to as the Model 1868. It has the standard New Model 1863 sights and markings, a new stock fitted during the conversion/refurbishment process with only a "DFC" cartouche on the left, original buttplate cut for a patch box, and a saddle ring bar and ring on the left.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 50% of the factory/arsenal refurbished blue finish and case colors remain. Strong niter blue is present on several of the smaller components. There is also speckled mild oxidation, some brighter rub wear at the muzzle, and various marks and scratches. The wood is solid and has some small repairs, dents, light scratches, and a crisp cartouche. The action functions very well, and most of the markings are crisp. This is a very good example of a Sharps cartridge conversion carbine that was made for issue to the U.S. cavalry in the Indian Wars.
